Product Safety and Global Product Compliance

Borealis is committed to Responsible Care® and wants its products to pose no risk to humans or the environment, at any stage of their life cycle. To ensure this, Borealis applies strict chemicals management rules and enforces high Product Stewardship standards.

Borealis has adopted a hazardous chemicals strategy, which takes into account the level of hazard, risk, regulatory developments and stakeholder concerns. Open and transparent communication with stakeholders is one of the cornerstones of Responsible Care®.

We embrace the aims of the European Green Deal, and actively engage in advocacy to make the EU Chemical Strategy for Sustainability a success.

You can find information on how Borealis manages hazardous chemicals, product compliance to EU REACH and CLP as well as to other relevant legislation in our global markets, and how Borealis supports our customers to comply with relevant application-related products legislation.

Expertise along the value chain

Product stewardship is part of Borealis’ Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) function. Product stewardship plays a role at various steps of the lifecycle of a product.

Raw materials

All raw materials going into Borealis products are carefully assessed with regards to their safety and regulatory status. Our suppliers need to provide comprehensive information including up-to-date Safety Data Sheets, composition information and depending on the end application also additional regulatory information. Only after approval by the product stewardship department, raw materials are allowed to be used in Borealis production plants.

Production

The location HSE departments take care that all chemicals are used safely in our production processes and that national chemical regulations are fulfilled.

Products

The product stewardship department assesses each product for its safety and regulatory compliance in target markets and applications. Safety Data Sheets and other compliance documents are issued and published on the Borealis webpage for our customers.

Customers, retailers & brand owners

We provide a lot of information and general and product-specific safety and regulatory documentation on the Borealis homepage. For more specific requests our customers can best reach us via their Borealis sales contact or by using MyBorealis.

Consumers & end users

With our safety assessments and product documentation, we support our customers to bring safe consumer products to the market.

Waste & recycling

Borealis is very engaged in making plastics circular. For mechanical recycling of post-consumer waste, it is impossible to know the full composition of the material. Therefore Borealis developed risk assessment criteria and a testing regime to guarantee chemical compliance.

Feedstock

Borealis uses a wide variety of different feedstocks for polyolefin and base chemicals production. Borealis utilizes ISCC Plus for tracking bio-based and circular raw materials. ISCC Plus is a sustainability certification program for bio-based and circular raw materials.
